Over the years sexual orientation has been an issue in our society. Many people are against homosexuality and bisexuality. Sexual orientation is generally one of three main categories, heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Heterosexual is someone who is attracted to members of the opposite sex. A homosexual is someone that is attracted to members of the same sex. And, a bisexual person is one that is attracted to members of both sexes. There are other categories of sexual orientation. Some people could be considered transgendered which is someone who feels they were put in the wrong body. But heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual are the three main categories of sexual orientation. You do not know the struggles they really face, and how they feel deep inside. So how can you tell a person what their sexual orientation should be? Religion and cultural views have a big impact on sexual views. Being brought up in a religious family makes it hard to be open about your sexual preference. For example, my cousin’s parents are Christian and were 100% against her being lesbian. They kicked her out and expected her to change her ways if she wanted to live back at home. What they didn’t understand was it wasn’t her choice. Growing up knowing you’re homosexual or bisexual is tough. Not many people are accepting in junior high or high school, students could be getting harassed or ostracized. Approximately 28% of gay and lesbian high school students in have dropped out of school because of harassment resulting from their sexual orientation. 80% of lesbians, gay and bisexual youth reported severe isolation problems. They experienced social isolation, emotional isolation and cognitive isolation. 26% of gays and lesbian youth are forced to leave home because of conflicts with their families over their sexual identities. Everyday people are going to counseling groups to try to work with their sexuality.
